Abbe Faria was Abbe that Edmond Dante had the opportunity to
meet while in prison. They met quite accidently. The Abbe had been digging an
escape tunnel. It was through a miscalculation of his that he ended up in Dante’s
cell. This chance meeting saved Dante’s life and gave both prisoners hope.
This is an exchange between Abbe Faria and Edmond:
“I will freely confess that my historical labors have been
my greatest solace and relief. While retracing the past, I forget the present;
and traversing at will the path of history I cease to remember that I am myself
a prisoner.”
